Rusty surprise at a family reunion ruined my skillet day

I brought my 12-inch Lodge to a cookout at my sister's place in Ohio last weekend and someone accidentally left it soaking in the sink with soapy water for 20 minutes. By the time I found it, there was a nasty orange rust patch right in the center that took me an hour with steel wool to scrub off. Has anyone else had to deal with a relative messing up their cast iron like that, and how do you get them to just not touch it?

Honestly, 20 minutes of soapy water probably wasn't what did it. Most modern Lodge pans have a factory seasoning that can handle a quick soap bath without rusting that fast. Are you sure it wasn't already sitting wet for a lot longer, or maybe someone scrubbed it with a rough pad before you found it?

Oh man, that stings. I've learned the hard way to guard my cast iron like a dragon hoards gold because apparently my family thinks seasoning is something you add to soup.
