Soap on cast iron... am I the only one who had it wrong?

I grew up watching my dad scrub his cast iron skillet with nothing but hot water and a stiff brush. He'd lecture me that soap would ruin the seasoning forever. Then last year I was at a friend's cookout and he just casually squirted some Dawn on his pan after making bacon, like it was nothing. I almost had a heart attack right there in his kitchen. He told me modern dish soaps don't have lye anymore and won't strip the seasoning unless you really go at it. I tried it on my own pan when I got home and honestly my skillet is cleaner now and the seasoning still looks fine after a month of doing it. So what's the deal... are there folks out there still scrubbing with salt and water, or have most of you switched to soap too?

Wait you can use Dawn now? I feel SO betrayed by my grandmother's wisdom.

Wait your dad never even tried soap once? That's wild.
