Unpopular opinion: boiling water to strip seasoning is way faster than vinegar soaks
I got tired of waiting 24 hours for a vinegar bath to strip an old crusty skillet I found at a flea market. Tried boiling water in it on my stove for 10 minutes instead. The gunk just peeled right off with a plastic scraper. No fumes, no smell, no waiting. Anyone else tried this shortcut or am I gonna wreck my pan long term?

Whoa, slow down there speed racer! I have to say, I'm pretty worried about this method. Boiling water is basically the enemy of cast iron, you know? The rapid temperature change and constant steam can actually cause micro fractures in the metal over time, especially if your pan is old and has any hidden stress points. I've seen people ruin perfectly good skillets by shocking them with heat like that, and a 10 minute boil on a crusty flea market find feels like playing with fire (literally). The vinegar soak is slow for a reason, it's a gentle chemical reaction that doesn't stress the iron. Even if the gunk peels off, you might be setting yourself up for a cracked pan down the road, and then all that time you saved won't seem so great.

Fair point. You might've just talked me out of boiling.
