Watched a 70 year old strip a pan with oven cleaner in 20 minutes

Last weekend I met an old timer at a flea market in Portland who was selling restored pans. He showed me how he uses yellow cap oven cleaner in a trash bag to strip off old seasoning. I always thought you needed hours of sanding and elbow grease to get down to bare metal. He said let it sit outside for a day then just rinse it off. Has anyone else tried this method for restoring a nasty rusty pan?

Let it sit outside for a day then just rinse it off" - yeah I'm gonna have to call BS on that being a real restoration. I tried the oven cleaner bag method on a crusty old Wagner I found and it left a weird residue that took actual scrubbing with steel wool to get off. Plus you gotta be real careful with that yellow cap stuff, it'll mess up your lungs if you breathe the fumes.

Oh I don't know about all that. I've used the yellow cap method a few times and never had a problem with residue. Just gotta make sure you rinse it really good and maybe hit it with some vinegar after.
