I finally gave up on pre-ground black pepper after a side-by-side taste test

Freshly cracked Tellicherry on a simple steak last week had a bright, complex heat that the jarred stuff just didn't. Anyone have a favorite pepper mill that holds up to heavy kitchen use?

Tellicherry is like eight bucks for a tiny jar at my grocery store. That stuff is serious business. My old plastic mill cracked grinding that kind of peppercorn. Upgraded to a Peugeot. Thing is a tank. Heavy metal gears. Grinds fine or coarse with a twist. Worth every penny for daily use.

How long did that plastic mill last before it gave out on the Tellicherry?

Oh man, I had a buddy who went through the exact same thing. He bought a cheap plastic grinder for those Tellicherry peppercorns and it basically died on the first handful. The little gear inside just stripped out and it wouldn't spin at all. He tried supergluing it back together but that lasted maybe two days before it cracked again. So yeah, I think some peppercorns are just too hard for the flimsy plastic stuff.
