Had a brush head snap off inside a flue yesterday

Was cleaning a chimney in a 1920s house in Tacoma, using my standard 8-inch poly brush. Halfway up, the metal rod just sheared clean off, leaving the brush stuck about 15 feet up. Had to rig a hook from some spare cable and fish it out for almost an hour. Anyone got a lead on a tougher brush brand that can handle old, uneven clay liners?

Yeah, that binding issue @reese_bell mentioned is exactly what happens. I switched to the segmented steel rods with a swivel head connector after a similar snap. The flex helps it ride over those old liner bumps without locking up. My SootMaster brush has held up for three seasons now on my Tacoma route.

What made you switch from solid rods to something with more flex?

That sounds like a real pain to deal with. Were you using a solid rod or the segmented fiberglass ones? I've heard the solid ones can bind and snap in older flues that aren't perfectly straight.
