Had a homeowner call my work 'too clean' and it bugged me for days. Last month I swept a chimney for a guy in Portland and he said the flue looked 'too clean' like I didn't do a real job. He wanted to see soot marking on the brush or something to prove I actually went up there. At first I got defensive and told him I always use a HEPA vacuum and get every bit of dust out. But after thinking about it I started leaving a little bit of ash in the bottom on purpose so folks can see I was actually working. Now I sweep the flue spotless but toss a small handful of old ash back down before I leave. Has anyone else dealt with a customer who thought clean work meant lazy work?

Tossing ash back down is wild, I cannot believe that solved it.

That 'too clean' thing hit me hard. Used to think thorough work should speak for itself but nah, people need visual proof. Now I'm rethinking how I present my finished jobs, a little mess makes the point better.
