Hot take: that wire brush on a drill is ruining your flue tiles, took me 7 years to figure out
Everyone in my local Facebook group swears by the drill mounted wire brush for creosote, but I finally got a camera up a flue in a 1920s house on Marlin Street and saw what it does to older clay tile. It puts spider web cracks in the glaze that you cannot see from the top, and 3 years later those cracks are where the creosote soaks in deep. Took me almost 4 hours with hand rods and poly brushes last Tuesday to get a flue clean that a drill would have done in 40 minutes, but the tiles looked untouched when I was done. Anyone else seeing cracked tile liners show up way more on homes where a drill brush was used for years?
The spider web cracks in the glaze line is what gets me, because you truly cannot see them from the top. I've been sweeping my own chimney for years and probably felt like a genius doing it with a drill, so this is a nice humble pie moment for me. Hand rods take forever but I'd rather lose an afternoon than find out later my tiles are soaking up creosote.
