I finally stopped brushing cold flues after a 30 year sweep in Bangor told me to warm the masonry first
Last month a guy named Ray who has been sweeping in Bangor for 30 years told me to run a hair dryer up the flue for 10 minutes before I touch it with a brush, because cold masonry grabs soot like glue. I tried it on a 1920s rental with a nasty glaze layer and the stuff came off in sheets instead of dust, saved me maybe 40 minutes on one stack. Has anyone else heard the warm it first trick, or is Ray just messing with the new guy?
