Pro tip: The drain brush trick that saved me 3 hours on a heavy creosote job
I had this one flue on an old farmhouse that was packed with stage 3 creosote and my standard rods and brush kept binding up halfway down. After fighting it for 20 minutes I pulled out a heavy duty drain cleaning brush with the long flexible cable and fed it down from the top first to break up the hard chunks. Has anyone else used a non-standard tool like a drain brush to loosen up a tough clog before going in with the regular kit?

Doesn't that just figure though? The best fix for a problem usually comes from something you already have sitting around the garage for a totally different job. It's funny how being resourceful beats having the right tool every time.

Whoa, that's actually kind of genius. I wonder if the flexible drain cable would work better for tight corners too, since it can bend more than a standard rod.
