PSA: That 'universal' chimney cap adapter cost me $45 and a whole afternoon
It didn't fit any of the three flue tiles I tried it on, so I had to go back to the supply house anyway. Anyone have a good brand for odd-sized clay flue liners?

Honestly that "universal" label is basically just marketing, you can't expect one product to fit every old chimney out there. Spending an afternoon and forty bucks is pretty standard for a first try on a home project like this. Those odd sized liners are why supply houses exist, you were always going to need a custom solution.

Yeah, the "universal" thing gets me every time. It's like they hope you won't measure before you buy. You're right about supply houses, that's the only place to get stuff that actually fits an old house. My place was built in the 50s and nothing is standard.

Did they at least give you the right gasket or did you have to buy that separate too? I spent a whole weekend once trying to force a "universal" part to fit before I realized the box said good for standard sizes only.
