Question about the way people talk about creosote buildup

Honestly, I keep hearing homeowners in my area call any black stuff in their flue 'soot', but that's not right and it matters for explaining the fire risk. Has anyone else had to correct this on a job recently?

Honestly, calling it all soot is just easier for people to get. The point is there's black gunk in there that needs cleaning, and that's the fire risk. Getting hung up on the exact name feels like splitting hairs when the end result is the same, a dirty flue. Most homeowners just need to know it's dangerous and to get it cleaned, not a science lesson.

Sure, but is the wrong word actually causing a problem? If they understand it's dangerous and needs cleaning, the job gets done. Getting the exact name right seems like a technicality that only matters to us in the trade.

Yeah, that mix-up happens all the time. It makes explaining the actual danger a lot harder for sure. Gets frustrating trying to get the point across.
