Saw a historic 1850s chimney in Charleston last weekend that had no liner at all

The homeowner said they've been burning in it for 40 years without issues, but I'm wondering how long that luck can hold out has anyone dealt with convincing someone to add a liner in a situation like that?

My buddy Jim had a chimney fire last winter after 25 years with no liner.

Oh man, that's a scary story! I check my liner every year now since I once convinced myself a little creosote was "fine" for way too long. Guess I'm just a slow learner when it comes to fire safety lessons!

Yeah that's rough. A mate of mine ignored a cracked flue tile for two years and ended up with a chimney fire that lit up the whole street.
