Serious question, did I get hosed on that $70 creosote powder at the supply house in Albany?

Sprinkled a full tub of that stuff down a dirty flue last Tuesday and it did about as much as table salt, so I'm asking the old timers here what chemical actually softens hard glaze or if I just torched 70 bucks for nothing.
