Shoutout to the old timer who showed me how to spot a bad liner by just looking at the soot pattern

I heard a guy at a trade meetup in Denver say liners don't matter much if you sweep clean enough, but after 8 years doing this I know that soot buildup always tells the real story so has anyone else had customers argue about liner replacement costs until they see the proof in the flue?

You ever notice how people always want to skip the expensive fix until the problem smacks them in the face? It's like when my buddy kept ignoring his check engine light, then his transmission blew on the highway. Same thing with liners - customers think they're saving money by skipping replacement, but that soot buildup is just the check engine light for their chimney. Once they see the black crust eating away at the flue, they finally get why the old timer's advice is gold. Some lessons you just gotta learn the hard way I guess.

I get what you're saying, but honestly some of those old timers are stuck in their ways and don't trust modern sweeping techniques so maybe the customer's got a point if the liner still passes inspection.
