Talked to an old timer at the supply house yesterday and he said something that stuck with me

I was grabbing a new brush at Mason's Supply in Akron when a guy who's been sweeping since the 70s told me I was cleaning my brushes wrong. He showed me how he taps them against a concrete floor after every job to knock out the fine soot. I had been using a wire brush to scrape them clean and it was wearing them down way faster. He said a brush like the one I had should last at least 5 years not 2. Has anyone else been ruining their brushes without knowing it?

Funny enough, that tapping trick actually cracks some brushes if the ferrule isn't tight, so you're trading brush life for a different kind of damage nobody talks about.
