That time a bird's nest turned my chimney inspection into a comedy show
I was checking a chimney for blockages last month, focusing on making it more energy efficient. The homeowner wanted a green solution, so I suggested installing a cap to keep critters out. As I shined my light up, a family of starlings decided to put on an exit show. Birds flew out in every direction, one even dropping a twig on my head. The homeowner's kids were watching from the window and started giggling uncontrollably. We all had a good laugh once the birds were safely outside, and I got the cap on. It reminded me that sometimes, working with nature means dealing with its messy surprises. Now I always carry a gentle deterrent spray made from citrus peels, just in case.

Man, that sounds exactly like my luck. I mean, you can plan for everything and then a bird just turns the whole job into a circus. I had a chickadee dive bomb my toolbox once, it's like they wait for an audience. Those kids laughing must have been the best part, even with the twig to the head. It's good you found a way to handle it that keeps everyone safe, birds included.

Totally get what @noah917 means about nature's plans. I had a similar standoff with some determined sparrows and found a mix of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle made them rethink their real estate choice. It's not foolproof, but it bought me the time to finish the job.

What gets me is that nature always finds a way past your best plans. You can have all the right gear and good intentions, but a bird will still try to build a condo in your work zone. It's why keeping a sense of humor is part of the job description.
