Had a talk with my electrician about heat pumps and it stuck with me

I was on a job last week, fixing a pipe in a basement, and the homeowner's electrician was there swapping out their old furnace for a heat pump. He told me it would cut their gas usage by about 70% in this climate, and he had the utility rebate paperwork right there, showing a $1,500 credit. I always figured heat pumps were a southern thing, but he showed me the model runs fine down to -5 degrees. Has anyone else here switched over and seen real savings on their monthly bills?

Man, that electrician knows what he's talking about! I made the jump two winters ago and my gas bill basically vanished, like we're talking maybe 25 bucks a month just for the pilot on the water heater now. The installer told me the same thing about cold weather performance and honestly I was skeptical, but that first January with single digit temps and the house stayed toasty, no backup heat kicking in at all.

Guess the electrician wasn't just blowing hot air for once, huh? Happy to hear the backup didn't even have to show up for work that January.
