Heat pumps in cold weather, I was wrong about them

I live in Minnesota and always figured heat pumps were a joke once it hits single digits. Last winter my neighbor installed one and let me check his energy bills. He used 35% less electricity compared to his old resistive heating during January's cold snap. The thing kept his house at 68 degrees when it was -10 outside. Has anyone else tried one in a northern climate and seen real savings?

Yeah, I'm not totally sold on this. There's a reason most people up north still use gas or oil furnaces. You're talking about one guy's setup and one winter, which could be a fluke. Maybe his old electric heater was just terrible or his house is super well insulated. I'd need to see a bunch of neighbors with similar houses and the same brand of heat pump to really believe it's that serious.

Fair enough, I feel you on that, it's smart to want more proof before making the switch.
