We started with one little tumbler in the corner of our tiny backyard, and last year I weighed everything exactly on my bathroom scale before it went in. Ended up with 850 pounds from just our kitchen waste, apple cores and coffee grounds and all those eggshells I crush up. The soil that came out of it was so dark and crumbly, my tomato plants went absolutely nuts compared to the ones I buy from the store. Now I'm trying to convince our neighbor to join in so we can double that number.

Oh man, that is such a cool number! My buddy Mike tried to start a compost pile in his apartment complex's tiny courtyard last year, and his neighbor kept throwing pizza boxes and old sandwich wrappers in it thinking it was just a trash can. He ended up having to fish out like a dozen greasy takeout containers before he gave up and moved the whole thing to his mom's house. The soil he did manage to make though still gave him some monster zucchini plants that took over half her garden.
