I finally stopped composting after that rat problem at the community plot

At the Maplewood garden last summer, someone's open pile attracted a whole family of rats that chewed through our tomato roots. Now I just put my veggie scraps in the trash pickup instead of pretending it's helping the soil. Has anyone else given up on home composting after a pest disaster?

Right move honestly. I tried to be Mother Earth for about three months until a raccoon decided my compost bin was an all you can eat buffet. It dug through the side like it was wet cardboard and left rotting kale all over my porch. Some of us just aren't cut out for the full organic lifestyle. You tried it, you got rats, you learned your lesson. Better to just toss the scraps than fight a war with rodents over some rotten banana peels.

Gently push back on that, @robinc66, but open piles are the main problem, not composting itself. A closed tumble bin or a Bokashi system keeps everything sealed tight and would stop those raccoons cold.
