My neighbor in Boise made me question my whole recycling routine
She told me she stopped rinsing her jars because the city trucks just dump everything in the same landfill anyway, and now I'm sitting here wondering if my 3 years of careful sorting was for nothing. Has anyone actually checked what their local facility does with mixed recyclables after pickup?

Just call your city's public works number and ask for the recycling coordinator. They'll tell you what actually happens. I did that a few years back and found out my town does sort everything, but they only take certain plastics and the rest does end up in the landfill. The rinsing part is mostly for the workers' sake, so stuff doesn't stink up the truck. Your sorting isn't totally pointless, but you might be wasting time on some items. Check your local rules online, they usually have a list of what actually gets recycled vs what gets trashed.
