My town's 'no mow May' week turned into a total mess

Our local council in Springfield encouraged everyone to skip mowing for a week to help pollinators, but my neighbor's yard got so overgrown it blocked the sidewalk. I spent three hours on Saturday helping him trim it back with hand clippers because he felt overwhelmed. Has your area tried something similar, and how did it actually work out?

You're focusing on one messy yard, but the whole point is to help the bees and butterflies. A little inconvenience for a week is a fair trade for giving nature a real boost. The bigger picture is what actually matters here.

Ever think a neat lawn was the only way? I used to, but @barnes.brian is right about the bigger picture. Letting things grow a bit really does help the bees, and that's more important.
