Pro tip: check the actual energy use before buying a 'green' appliance

I bought a new 'energy efficient' dehumidifier for my basement in Portland, thinking it would cut my power bill, but it used almost as much as my old unit. The store tag said it was green, but the real energy sticker showed it needed 500 watts, which is a lot. Has anyone found a good way to tell if an appliance is actually efficient before you buy it?

Been there. Those "green" labels can be so misleading. I always look for the yellow EnergyGuide sticker now, the one with the yearly cost estimate. It's the only thing I trust.

Read an article that said those eco logos are basically meaningless marketing.

My friend in Seattle bought a fridge with a big "Eco" logo, but it cost him $80 a year to run. He learned the hard way, like @cameron763 said, to only trust the official EnergyGuide label.
