Rant: My friend swore I was dumb for insulating my attic in July
He said I'd trap heat and ruin my AC bill. Three summers later in Phoenix, my place stays 10 degrees cooler and my electric bill dropped $40 a month. Has anyone else had people give bad energy saving advice that just doesn't hold up?

Your friend was DEAD wrong. I did the same thing in my house a few years back and people told me I was wasting my money. Attic insulation works year round, it's not just for keeping heat in during winter. The whole point is it creates a barrier so your HVAC doesn't have to fight the outside temp as hard. In summer that means the hot attic air can't bake down into your living space. My cooling costs dropped about the same as yours and my upstairs stopped feeling like a sauna. People who give advice like that usually never actually tried it themselves.

Yeah I had a buddy who talked me out of doing insulation for years telling me it was just a gimmick. Finally bit the bullet and did my attic a couple summers ago and honestly it was one of the best home upgrades I ever made. My AC used to run nonstop from June through August and now it actually cycles off and the upstairs doesn't feel like an oven anymore. The power bill drop was enough that it paid for itself in like two seasons. I swear people who trash talk it have never actually lived in a house where the upstairs was actually comfortable.
