Switched to native plants after a neighbor criticized my lawn

My neighbor Karen walked over last month and told me my grass monoculture was basically a dead zone for bugs and birds. She showed me her yard with milkweed and purple coneflowers and I saw like 3 different bee species in 5 minutes. So I tore out a 10x10 patch of lawn and put in a basic native garden from a local nursery in Portland. Has anyone else had a neighbor change their mind about lawns this way?

It's cool if you like it but lawns look way cleaner imo lol.

Oh, I hear what you're saying but I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately. It's funny how we grew up thinking that a perfect green lawn meant a well-kept home, but now I see people letting clover and wildflowers grow and it actually looks more alive and interesting to me. Clean is nice but sometimes clean looks like a giant carpet that doesn't have any bugs or birds visiting it. I think there's something to be said for letting things be a little wild and seeing what shows up.
