Unpopular opinion: I started telling my neighbors about my home energy bill and it actually got them to act

My electric bill in Austin was over $200 last July, so I started tracking my usage with the Sense monitor. I cut it down to $140 by just running my dishwasher and washer at night. When I casually told my next door neighbor about the drop, he asked how I did it. Now three houses on our block are doing the same thing. Has anyone else found that just talking about the real numbers works better than just saying 'save energy'?

Call your neighbor cheap, then watch them copy your homework to save money. People love a personal win more than a vague good deed. Guess being a little competitive works.

Tbh the real angle here is that neighbors usually know each other's spending habits way too well anyway. You call them cheap and suddenly they're upgrading their patio furniture just to prove you wrong. But the funny part is they'll buy the exact same brand you have, just a slightly different color so they can pretend they thought of it first. Next thing you know the whole block has matching fire pits and nobody wants to admit they got influenced. Its like a weird arms race but with lawn decor.

Wait, my neighbors just think I'm cheap?
