Changed my mind about dry ice blasting after seeing it at the Dow plant

I used to think dry ice blasting was just a gimmick for fancy shops. Then I visited the maintenance facility at the Dow Chemical plant in Midland last month. Saw them clean a 20 year old spindle motor in like 15 minutes with zero disassembly and no water damage. The operator showed me the before and after on a Haas VF-2 and it looked brand new. Honestly I'm thinking about renting a unit for our shop's next big retrofit job. Has anyone here used dry ice to clean their machines without taking them apart?

Haha "like 15 minutes with zero disassembly" yeah that's the part that got me too lol. I was at a trade show once where some guy had a dry ice demo setup and he cleaned grease off a gearbox without even unbolting it from the stand. Kinda makes you wonder why we've been using pressure washers and solvents all these years.

Right, so why are we still huffing solvent fumes and soaking rags in degreaser like a bunch of cavemen? I swear half my job is just cleaning crap off servers with compressed air and qtips, probably giving myself brain damage in the process. That dry ice demo sounds way too clean and easy, makes me feel like a chump for spending my saturdays scrubbing thermal paste off old heatsinks. Guess we're all stuck in the old ways until the boss finally caves and buys one of those dry ice blasters for the shop.
