Had to pick between a new tool and fixing an old machine - picked wrong

Last Tuesday my spindle started making this grinding noise on a Haas VF-2. I had $1200 set aside for a new probe setup I've been wanting for months. Foreman said I could either replace the spindle bearings for $800 or buy the probe kit. I went cheap and did the bearings myself over the weekend. Well I must have torqued something wrong because the runout is worse now and I scraped a $400 part this morning. Anyone else ever gamble on a repair and regret it?

Damn, you did the bearings yourself and made it worse?

Man, always test your work with a test cut before risking good material.
