I used to just eyeball tool offsets and pray it worked out

Spent 8 years guessing on offsets and crashing probes into vises. Last Tuesday I finally sat down with a dial indicator and set my offsets properly for a job on a Haas VF-2. Has anyone else had that moment where you realize you've been doing something dumb forever?

Heard a guy in a shop talk about how he went years without touching his probe calibration. Just let it drift and hoped for the best. That was me with everything. I remember crashing a tool probe into a soft jaw so hard it left a mark. Dial indicator changed everything once I actually watched a YouTube video on it. Now I check offsets before every job and it's way less stress.

Man, that feeling of realizing youve been fighting the machine for years hits hard. I had a similar moment on a Mazak where I crashed a tool setter into a part because I was too confident in my "feel" for tool lengths. Turned out my whole workflow was built on hope and bad habits. Dial indicators really do take the stress out of it once you get over that initial hump of learning.
