I used to think coolant concentration didn't matter much as long as it looked okay

After a pump seal failed on our Haas VF-2 last week, our maintenance guy showed me the refractometer reading was way off. I've been checking it every Monday morning since and the machine runs about 5 degrees cooler. How often do you all actually check yours?

Read a forum post where that exact thing killed a spindle.

Wait, you mean you weren't checking it every week before your seal blew? That's like saying you never check your oil until the engine starts knocking. Yeah, coolant concentration is one of those things that seems boring until it costs you a spindle or a pump. I check mine every Friday afternoon because I'm paranoid and I'd rather catch it early than explain to my boss why we need a new $3,000 pump. Plus, the machine running cooler is just a bonus - it's like free performance. You got lucky it was just a seal, that could've been a lot uglier.
