Just realized I've been tramming my vise wrong for 8 years
An old timer at a shop I temped at in Detroit caught me setting up a job and asked why my indicator was off center. He showed me a trick where you sweep the fixed jaw face first instead of the parallels. Said I was chasing the wrong zero the whole time. Anybody else have a basic setup habit they had to unlearn?

Seven years I spent tramming by the parallels like every beginner video shows. Then a guy at a job shop in Ohio just walked over and said, "You're measuring the vise body tilt not the fixed jaw square." He had me indicate the fixed jaw face while tapping the vise until the needle barely moved. After that I clamped a known square block and swept the top, it was dead nuts. Now I always zero on the fixed jaw face first and it saves me 15 minutes of chasing my tail.
