Just realized my collet nut cracked on the VF-2SS last Tuesday mid-run

Was running a 3 hour job on aluminum. Facing passes were fine until the finish pass started screaming. Pulled the tool and saw a hairline crack running right down the collet nut. Had to shut everything down and swap to a backup nut I keep in my box. The whole job got pushed back by a day and a half. My question is do you replace collet nuts at regular intervals or just run them till they fail like I was doing? Has anyone else had a nut crack on them out of nowhere?

Damn, right in the middle of a run? That's rough! I've never seen one crack without warning like that, usually mine just wear down slowly.

Yeah that line about wearing down slowly got me. I had a buddy who ran a shop near me and he said his collet nuts would just get loose over time not crack. But then one day his main nut just split right down the middle on a finish pass too. No warning at all. He said it sounded like a gunshot in the shop.
