Old timer told me to stop using coolant mist on aluminum parts
Guy named Frank who ran a Bridgeport for 30 years told me I was wrecking my surface finish by spraying coolant mist on aluminum. Said just use a little WD-40 or air blast instead. Tried it on a batch of 50 motor mounts last week and the finish came out way smoother with less tool wear too. Anyone else find that coolant messes with certain materials?

Frank must be the only guy who actually reads the WD-40 can.

You ever have a guy tell you something that just sounds wrong, but then you try it and it works? I had this old timer years ago tell me to run my carbide dry on cast iron. Said coolant makes it crack. I thought he was nuts. Then I chipped a brand new insert on a batch of brackets cause I had the flood on. Switched to just compressed air and the inserts lasted three times as long. Still don't fully get the science behind it, but I stopped questioning Frank types a long time ago.
