Shoutout to the guy who showed me the trick for that weird chatter on a 4140 part

I mean, I spent like four hours messing with speeds, feeds, and tool holders on a 4140 job before a guy from another shift walked by, heard the noise, and told me to just put a rubber band around the part sticking out of the vise, which fixed it in like 30 seconds, idk has anyone else had a weird simple fix for chatter that made you feel kinda dumb?

Ever notice the best fix is always the dumbest one?

My old shop had a Bridgeport that would sing on long end mills. The fix was taping a small lead weight to the side of the flutes. It looked ridiculous but it killed the vibration completely. Those little hack solutions are always hiding in plain sight, and you only find them after wasting half your day. It makes you wonder how much time we all lose overthinking things. The simplest answer is usually just some weird trick that breaks the harmonic.
