Spent half a day fighting a broken spindle because I ignored the coolant smell
Last Tuesday, I had this weird burning coolant smell coming from my Haas VF-2. I figured it was just old fluid burning off, kept running parts. Three hours later, the spindle starts making this grinding noise mid-cycle on an aluminum job. Had to stop everything, tear the head apart, and found a seized bearing that basically welded itself to the shaft. Cost me $450 for a replacement bearing and 6 hours of downtime. I should have listened to that smell sooner. Has anyone else had a spindle fail from coolant contamination?
