Spindle bearing let go on a Friday run of 600 parts, and I'm getting pushback for shutting the VMC down instead of finishing the batch
Was cutting 4140 on a Haas VF2 last Friday around 2pm and heard a growl I hadn't heard before, then felt the spindle getting warm on the housing. I stopped the run at part 127 of 600 and told the lead we needed to pull it, but he said we could limp through the weekend on lighter cuts and save the schedule. I held my ground and now the maintenance guy says the bearing cage was already cracked, so running it might've wrecked the whole spindle taper. My question is, do you all kill a job the second the spindle sounds wrong, or do you push it if the parts are still measuring good? I get the schedule pressure but I keep thinking about what a $6k spindle rebuild would've done to our quarter.
