Talked to a veteran machinist about tool offsets and he blew my mind
I was setting up a job on a Haas VF-2 last Tuesday and an old timer named Dave walked by. He saw me struggling with tool length offsets and just said "you're overcomplicating it, just use the same reference point every time." I had been using different spots on the part for each tool and it was causing all kinds of chatter. Has anyone else had a simple tip from a senior guy that totally changed how you work?

Old guys always know the simplest way to do things, don't they?

Totally see this pattern everywhere now, not just in machining. The best shortcuts always come from someone who's been doing the thing so long they stopped thinking about it. It's like watching an old cook just know how much salt to add without measuring.
