That moment I realized I was tramming my vise wrong for 2 years

Was running some aluminum parts last Tuesday and the finish looked like garbage, so this old timer walks over and just taps my indicator mount and says 'you're chasing the wrong zero.' Has anyone else had someone point out a basic setup mistake that made you feel like an idiot?

Chasing the wrong zero" sounds about right for a lot of setups, but honestly? I'd need to SEE it to know if it's THAT big a deal. I've seen guys spend an hour dialing in a vise perfectly for a part that's held in with two soft jaws anyway. Half the time the finish is bad because your tool is dull or you're running wrong speeds. Not saying the old timer was wrong, but sometimes folks get too caught up in being perfect instead of just making chips.

Sounds like people overthink the small stuff everywhere, not just in the shop.
