That old-timer in Dayton taught me more in 10 minutes than 3 years of school

I was running a job on a beat up Haas VF-2 and kept getting chatter on a deep pocket. This retired guy who used to work in the toolroom walks by, watches me for like 2 minutes, and says "your spindle speed is fighting your feed, kid. Drop the RPM by 400 and bump the feed 10%." I thought he was full of it but tried it and it was night and day. He then showed me how to read the scuffs on the insert to hear what the machine is saying. I still think about that every time I set up a cut. Anyone else get a random tip from a stranger that beat everything you learned in trade school?

Man, those old guys just see things we dont. Always trust the scuff on the insert lol.
