The $5 harbor freight level that saved my spindle
I was roughing out a piece of 4140 and kept getting weird chatter marks on the finish pass. My boss walked over, took out a cheap 6 inch level, and set it on the machine table and then the vise. Turns out the machine was off by about .003 over 12 inches from the last time somebody moved it. Has anyone else fixed a chatter problem with something that simple?

...and then your boss probably walked away mumbling something about "check the simple stuff first" while you stood there feeling like an idiot... I've definitely been there. Honestly, it's almost embarrassing how often the fix is just something basic like that. We spend all this time overthinking spindle speeds and tool coatings, but the machine being out of level will mess you up faster than any of that. Three thou over a foot doesn't sound like much but with a long stickout it'll chatter like crazy.

That three thou over a foot thing hits close to home. How do you even catch that if you're not checking the level regularly? Do you just get a feel for it after running enough parts, or are you pulling out the precision level every time you set up a new job? I've had times where a brand new machine was supposedly fine from the factory but still acted up until I found the feet were barely touching the floor. That whole "check the simple stuff" rule saves more headaches than any tooling upgrade I've ever tried.
