TIL a 71 year old machinist in Fresno still dials in every vise with a tap hammer
Stopped by a small job shop in Fresno to drop off some paperwork for a customer and the owner let me walk the floor while I waited. There was one guy running a beat up Haas VF2 in the corner, and I swear he spent a solid 10 minutes before every cycle tapping the vise with a little brass hammer and watching the indicator. I asked him why he doesn't just use a torque wrench like the rest of us, and he said he's been doing it this way for 38 years and has never scrapped a part from jaw lift. I watched him run 14 parts in a row and every one came off the machine within half a thou. He also blew the chips off his parallels with a piece of copper tube he brazed himself. Nothing fancy, no probes, no fancy setup sheets, just feel. Made me wonder how much of my own setup time is me trusting a number over what the machine is actually telling me. Any of you older guys still do the tap and feel thing, or has everyone switched over to torque specs?
