My bootcamp instructor said skip JavaScript frameworks and learn vanilla first

Back in March at the Flatiron School in Austin, my instructor kept pushing us to master plain JS before touching React. I thought he was old school and ignored him, jumped straight into React projects. 3 months later I couldn't debug a single fetch call without googling everything. Has anyone else ignored good advice and regretted it?

Yeah I spent two weeks trying to figure out why my React component wasn't updating. Turns out I had no idea how the DOM actually worked because I skipped the vanilla part. Had to go back and learn what document.querySelector even does. Felt real smart typing "useEffect(() => {})" while not understanding what a callback is.
