Burnt my $60 tamper on a hot portafilter after 3 weeks of owning it

Forgot to take it off before locking in and the heat melted the handle edge, anyone else switch to a metal tamper after ruining a nice wooden one this fast?

Ngl I actually think wooden handles are fine if you're careful about where you set them down. I've been using a walnut tamper for like 2 years now and never had this issue because I just keep it in the dosing cup or on the counter while I lock in. The metal ones feel cold and slick to me, especially in the morning when my hands are still waking up. Don't get me wrong, $60 hurts, but I'd rather learn the habit than swap to something less comfortable.

That really stings, especially when you just dropped that much on a nice new tamper. Almost did the same thing myself a couple months back and now I always double check before locking in. Wood handles are beautiful but they just can't handle that heat like metal ones can.
