Had a barista pull a shot that tasted like blueberries at a shop in Portland last month

I was visiting my daughter and she took me to this tiny place called Heart Roasters. The barista was a younger guy with glasses and he asked what I usually drink. I said dark roast with cream. He nodded and made me a straight espresso shot from some Ethiopian beans. Tasted exactly like blueberries. No cream needed. I have been trying to replicate that at home with my Gaggia but I keep getting sour shots instead of fruity ones. Has anyone else had a single coffee experience that completely reset what you thought was possible with espresso?

Read somewhere that Ethiopian beans naturally have those blueberry notes because of how they're processed. Probably need to find a light roast Ethiopian instead of your usual dark roast to get close to that flavor profile.

Oh please, like any of us amateurs with our little home machines are ever going to pull a shot that good. That barista probably made a blood sacrifice to the espresso gods or something before that shot. My Gaggia gives me sour shots on a good day unless I stand there and babysit the pressure for ten minutes like it's a fussy toddler. But seriously, James is right about the Ethiopian beans. You have to find a light roast from Yirgacheffe specifically or you're just chasing a ghost in a coffee cup.
