I finally caved and tried a moka pot after years of thinking it was just fancy instant coffee
My roommate's dad brought one over from Italy last month and made me a cup. I always figured moka pot coffee would come out bitter and weird but honestly it was smooth and had this thick mouthfeel I didn't expect. He used a dark roast from a local roaster in Portland and let the water settle before pouring. I had to admit it was legit. Now I'm wondering if I need to start with a cheap one or just go for a Bialetti. Anyone have a preference on brands for a first timer?

Oh wow, yeah I was totally in the same boat... always thought moka pots were just overcomplicated espresso wannabes. But a friend made me a cup last year and I had to eat my words, it's genuinely good stuff.

The moka pot is basically a fancy science experiment that happens to make good coffee. I'd just grab a Bialetti - they're cheap enough that you won't feel bad if you don't use it much, but they actually work right.
