I used to think weighing coffee was overkill, but a $12 scale changed my mind

For years I just used the scoop that came with my bag of beans and called it good. Then I got a bag of single-origin from a roaster in Portland and it tasted sour no matter what I did. I finally caved and bought a cheap digital scale off Amazon for $12. Weighed out 18g exactly with 36g of water out and the difference was wild. First cup came out balanced and sweet for the first time in weeks. Has anyone else fought against weighing their coffee and then caved? What made you finally try it?

Honestly, I was the exact same way for like two years. I kept telling myself the scoop was good enough and that weighing was just for snobs. Then I got a bag of Ethiopian beans that tasted like battery acid until I finally grabbed a $15 scale, and now I can't go back.

Funny you mention that battery acid thing @eric_murphy36 because I had almost the exact same problem with a Kenyan roast. I was getting so frustrated I started messing with water temp and grind size like crazy, still tasted like I was chewing on a lemon rind. The day I finally caved and bought a scale I found out my "scoop" was actually giving me like 14g instead of 18g, no wonder everything was sour. Now I'm that guy with a scale and a little notebook tracking every brew, it's a sickness but at least the coffee is good.
