That guy at the cupping who kept saying 'notes of leather' like he invented the term

He was sniffing a washed Ethiopian and went on about leather for a full two minutes before someone pointed out it's known for jasmine and citrus. Has anyone else run into the pretender who thinks flavor notes are a contest?

Used to roll my eyes at tasting notes until I tried a natural Costa Rica and actually got strawberry.

Right? I'm still waiting to taste anything that isn't burnt toast.

You ever read that thing about how people just make up tasting notes because they think it makes them sound smart? I swear I saw a study or an article somewhere that said most people can't tell the difference between flavors past a basic level like sweet or bitter. It's all suggestion and peer pressure at those cupping things. That leather guy probably heard some other snob say it once and now it's his whole personality. I'd rather have someone say "tastes like coffee" than pretend they're getting hints of old car interior.
