Three batches in a row came out bitter, fixed it with one filter change

Last Tuesday I pulled my cold brew after 18 hours and it tasted like a tire fire. Same beans, same grind, same water ratio I've used for months. I was about to blame the bag of beans from that new roaster in Portland. Then I noticed my paper filter had a tiny tear near the edge, so fines got through and over-extracted overnight. Swapped to a fresh filter and ran another batch the same night, 17 hours, and it came out smooth and sweet like normal. I've been using the same funnel and filter holder for like two years and never thought to inspect it. Anyone else had a small gear issue wreck a batch that wasn't the coffee itself?

Tire fire, now that's a flavor I'd like on a bag label.
