DAE compare a 1912 Baedeker map to its 1923 edition and realize the newer one is basically useless?
I picked up both editions of the Baedeker guide to the Rhine at an estate sale in Milwaukee last Saturday for $15 total, mostly because the fold-out maps looked cool. Spent Sunday afternoon laying them side by side and the 1912 version has hand-drawn shading for every hill and castle ruin along the river, plus little hachure marks for the vineyard slopes. The 1923 edition swapped all that texture for plain flat outlines and dropped about 40 percent of the small towns, probably because they redrew it after the war and cut costs. Has anyone else run into this with post-war reprints, or is it just the German guides that got stripped down like this?
Check the 1923 printing date more closely, since Baedeker kept hachures well into the twenties and the flat maps may just be a cheaper late-war reprint.
